Juncture-Junction

... where things are joined ...

... something that joins or connects ...

... a transition layer or boundary ...

Juncture-Junction is a participatory, public space, media environment about historical memory, cultural identity, and collective recognition in Los Angeles. The core content component of the environment is the Remapping-LA interpretive media database, containing thousands of historical images, videos, and sounds enriched by layers of metadata including temporal and geographical information, descriptive texts, and extensive tagging.

Cell phone text messaging and sensing technology make it possible for visitors' interests and the real time movement of the nearby Los Angeles River, the Metro Gold Line trains and traffic on Broadway to be combined into a dynamic exploration of the forces that shaped the evolution of the city.

By sending text messages to the system, each night participants will collectively create an interactive audio-visual timeline reflecting the complex layered nature of the city`s historical development and its cultural identity.

Juncture-Junction was conceived and produced specifically for the new Los Angeles State Historic Park. Resulting from community mobilization, the development of the park offers Los Angeles and its people a unique opportunity for collective investigation, reflection, and dialogue about the city we have and the city we want. Juncture-Junction was created with the desire to stimulate and support that process.

Juncture-Junction is the latest in a series of modules emerging from Remapping-LA, a core project of UCLA`s Center for Research in Engineering, Media and Performance (REMAP), which is a partnership between the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television and the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science.

REMAP bridges the world-class faculty and students of both campus units to explore new enriching cultural forms and empowering social situations enabled by the thoughtful interweaving of engineering, the arts and community empowerment.

REMAP was created and is lead by William Kaiser, Fabian Wagmister, and Jeff Burke.
